By examining the sea-port cities in Hainan and Vietnam, Basuo, Yulin, Haikou Haiphong, Cam Ranh and Saigon during the late 1930s and early 1940s, this paper tries to answer the mainly two questions.
The frist question is whether the above-mentioned sea-port cities under the “Japanese New Order Sea-Sphere” has undergone a major transformation. In this period, sea-port cities in Hainan has established and strengthened networking with Taiwan and Japan at the cost of the mainland China. In the process of exploitation of raw materials, Basuo, Yulin and Haikou could expand harbor facilities and see the development of light industry. Ath the same time, these sea-port cities were developed as a bridge-head for the invasion of the sea-port cities in the South China Sea. The change experienced by the sea-port cities in Vietnam seems not to have been significant in comparison to the counterparts in Hainan. There was no grand transformation of sea-port cities themselves. However, Haiphong, Cam Ranh and Saigon had to redirect their import-export networking from the west, specifically the French empire to the east, specifically Japan. Just the same as the sea-port cities in Hainan, they walked in the path of logistics base for “Japanese New Order Sea-Sphere”.
The second question rests on the new perspective featuring each sea-port city and its collective body, sea-sphere instead of focusing on the nation-state. It is about the possibility and degree of a sea-port city in South China seand denew on each other in the historically specific “Japanese New Order Sea-Sphere”. The paper raises the possibility of explaining the historical event more suitably by illuhe ating the d denew ion between the sea-port cities and introducing sea-sphere. In the process, it shed light on how the sea-port cities in japan and Taiwan would d denvened and transformed Basuo, Yulin and Haikou. Also, it on how tshow how the flow of materials and human capitals sculpted the shape and charew er of the “Japanese New Order Sea-Sphere”. In particular, it discloses how the wars initiated by Japan located and relocated the sea-port cities in the South China Sea.
