The present study explores South Korean university students’ requesting behavior in cross-cultural interaction via computer. A total of 296 natural request tokens were collected from 180 Internet chatting sessions between South Korean and Japanese university students. The focus of the data analysis was on South Korean students’ choice of request strategy types and their use of mitigating devices. In addition, it examined gender differences in their requesting behavior. The analysis showed that the Korean university students employed a variety of request strategies, including both direct and indirect, although their preference for mood derivables (i.e., imperatives) appeared stronger than that for other types. With regard to their mitigating behavior, the South Korean students predominantly used grounders (i.e., expressions providing the underlying reasons preceded or followed by a request token) and politeness markers such as please. Gender differences were found in the preference for request strategies. Overall, male students favored mood derivables over the other strategy types to a great degree than did female students. However, no gender difference was observed in their use of mitigation strategy. Discussion on the findings of the study is included.
