This article provides a corpus study of how Korean learners (mis)use negative frequency adverbs (e.g., hardly, rarely, barely, scarcely, and seldom) within the context of language pedagogy. The current investigation utilizes the Gachon Learner Corpus and the Yonsei English Learner Corpus to distinguish the error patterns that language learners display. In addition, the Corpus Of Contemporary American-English and the Sejong English-Korean Parallel Corpus are examined in light of a comparative analysis. The corpus analysis shows that Korean EFL learners have a tendency to use negative frequency adverbs less often than ordinary frequency adverbs, and they commit more errors when using negative frequency adverbs than when using ordinary frequency adverbs. In particular, the present study reveals that Korean learners often misuse hardly compared to the other negative frequency adverbs: (i) The adverb is quite frequently misplaced. (ii) It is often used confoundingly as an adverb for hard. (iii) It is sometimes mal-formed with a spurious negative operator. These indicate that Korean learners may not have sufficiently acquired its usage as a negative frequency adverb. Furthermore, Korean learners tend to overgeneralize the derivational rule of attaching the -ly suffix and do not seem to be fully aware that hardly lexically involves a negation in semantics.
